Coast Rocketry Mandrel Tubes

Coast Rocketry mandrel tubes have been custom made to our own specifications and are specially designed to for use as mandrel tubes. Each tube is specially sized to allow for a wrap of release material such as Mylar.

Our mandrel tubes measure 48" long allowing you to make longer tubes and use fewer couplers. Longer tubes also allow minimum diameter builders to use longer motors. Each one is made with tight spirals and precision made from the finest Kraft paper.

Larger diameters now available in 42" to help save on shipping costs!!

Finally, an easy way to fiberglass your body tube! The EASYGLAS SOCK is a stretchy sleeve that fits over your airframe to make fiberglassing a breeze. Traditional fiberglassing methods are tricky, and involve wrapping cloth around a tube. The downside of this old approach is that it's time consuming, really messy, frustrating and, worst of all, leaves an overlap ridge that has to be sanded down. In short, it's a royal pain!

Finally there's an easy way to glass your tube - - with the EASYGLAS SOCK.

The EASYGLAS SOCK is not fiberglass, but is made of a material that readily absorbs resin and adds structural strength. We've tried it and it works beautifully. Best of all, it finishes easily. The EASYGLAS SOCK is about as thick as 3 or 4 oz fiberglass cloth. Here's the simple procedure:

  1. Slide EASYGLAS SOCK over dry airframe and tie the loose ends with twist-ties.
  2. Mix your resin, and apply thoroughly over the EASYGLAS SOCK. Squeegy excess material and rotate tube occasionally while resin cures.
  3. Once cured, lightly cut down high spots with sandpaper, then prime with several coats of extra thick filler primer (available at department stores). Be sure to sand between coats of primer.
That's it!! Trim the ends and you're ready to paint!

Finally...lamination for the rest of us!!

Item Description Price
Small EasyGlas Sock  For 4" airframes only. order 1 1/2 times the length of your airframe. 1.95 / foot
Large  EasyGlas Sock For 5.5" - 6" airframes. order 2 times the length of your airframe. 2.45 / foot
Extra Large EasyGlas Sock For 7.5" airframes and larger. order 2 times the length of your airframe. 2.90 / foot

The EASYGLAS SOCK is easy to slide on. The EASYGLAS SOCK has no overlap ridges to sand,
and tightly hugs the tube so there's no need for vacuum bagging.
It doesn't get any easier.

*Note - The length of sleeves can vary greatly during handling. We there for measure all sleeves by weight. The weight for each size has been calculated by the manufacturer to ensure that it equals 1 foot as woven at the factory. This ensures that the sleeves are measured accurately at the time of sale.

100% Carbon Fiber Biaxial Sleeves

Carbon fiber sleeves from Coast Rocketry offer a convenient way to either reinforce an airframe tube of construct a carbon fiber tube using Coast Rocketry's mandrel tubes. Sleeves offer a seamless method making composite lay-up easier than ever before.

Because of the potential for reduced tensile strength of as much as 30% when carbon fiber sleeves are used for tubes outside of their intended weave design, Coast Rocketry is offering sleeves specifically woven for common airframe sizes. This ensure that the material will offer peak performance as designed by the manufacturer.

100% Kevlar Biaxial Sleeves

Kevlar sleeves from Coast Rocketry offer yet another way to either reinforce an airframe tube and can be used with carbon fiber to do lay ups using Coast Rocketry's mandrel tubes. Kevlar sleeves offer the same seamless method as other sleeve products.

Carbon / Kevlar Biaxial Sleeves

Carbon Kevlar sleeves from Coast Rocketry offer a strong and attractive alternative for airframe construction. The blend of yellow Kevlar with the familiar shimmer of black carbon fibre is sure to turn a few heads at a launch.

This ensure that the material will offer peak performance as designed by the manufacturer.

The modulus of a material can be measured in tensile or in shear. The amazing hybrid is designed to offer the combined benefits of both materials. It is also a very striking visual effect when finished with a clear epoxy!!

Heat Shrink Tubing

Quickly and easily create professional looking shafts
(in 4 easy steps)

1) Slip this special flexible composite-grade non-flammable heat shrink tubing over top of your epoxied sleeve. Note: this heat shrink tubing works great around bends too!

2) Use a heat gun (starting in the middle of the shaft/sleeve and working your way to the ends of the shaft). The heat shrink tubing will squeeze out excess epoxy and provide you with that smooth professional finish!

3) After the epoxy dries, use a sharp seam-cutter (from your local fabric store) to remove the shrink tubing.

4) Sand (if desired) the shaft lightly with 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper for a few seconds, then add your final clear coat (spray all-weather urethane or wipe-on a tiny amount of epoxy - just enough to barely wet the shaft and give it that gorgeous shine
[as thin as possible - no weight added here].

Let dry, you're done!

Tubing will shrink up to 1/2 it original size. Shrink tubing stretches very little, so (for ex.) a 1.8" shaft should actually use the next size (a 3.0"
composite shrink tube). A 1.25" shaft should use a 1.5" shrink tube.

The composite shrink tubing shrinks slightly lengthwise. Allow at least 2 inches for every 3ft.

1.0 0.5" - 0.75" OD $1.00 /ft
1.5" 0.75 - 1.25" OD $1.75/ft
2.0" 1.25" - 1.5" OD $1.95/ft
3.0" 1.5" - 2.0" OD $2.45/ft
4.0" 2.5" - 3.0" OD $3.50/ft
